Steadfast Love

There is a persistent hum of goodness that ever reverberates.
Within it an invariability, as an impassive ocean tide.
What unremitting array of delight is this?
Ever present, it is steadfast love.

Yet, while its steadiness is so evident, so is its opposition.
Taken for granted, ignored, even despised,
will it succumb to the failures of its recipients?
Never relenting is this steadfast love.

To know something of it is mystery, for humanness limits comprehension.
Such finiteness seems to cloud the fulness of experience.
Yet still, the longer one’s awareness, the clearer it becomes.
Soon, the most vivid of knowledge is this steadfast love.

Every grand river flows first from an inauspicious spring on a lofty height,
descending and growing in prestige until it finds its sea.
This, though, flows from an ocean.
What source inexhaustible lends this steadfast love?

Do you see its flow, pictured for us in crimson hue?
Do you know its beginnings, its Author, its Giver?
This ocean is not quiescent, but personal.
A gift and grace of a living One is this steadfast love!

Would you know its breadth and width and height and depth?
How far must we travel to hap upon its fountain head?
Not far! No, this stream flows quite nigh your current place.
Would you be engulfed in this steadfast love?

The drone and murmur of life’s currents may deafen you,
yet once your ears are opened, this will deafen you to all else.
The rays of enterprise pulsate, and may blind you to it,
but ah! Once eyes are reopened, all you see is this steadfast love!

Even with the most glorious sights, you may become bored.
Even of the luxuries afforded by wealth you may tire.
Yet, this is daily fresh and vigorous, alive and anew!
Can we deplete the grandeur and awe of steadfast love?

Let every riverbed become a dry canyon.
Let every ocean become an arid crater.
Let not one refreshing drop form in a cloud,
but this steadfast love will cascade, new every morning.

For every stream has a beginning and an end.
Every lake is surrounded by its banks,
but He who gives this gift has neither source nor shore.
From the uncreated Creator emanates this steadfast love.

Springs of water are disinterested in your wellbeing.
Clouds of rain have no capacity to care,
but the Lord sets His mercy upon you.
The Lord gives this gift of steadfast love.

Rivers flow on natural paths and dispense wherever gravity pulls;
but Christ, the fountainhead of this great stream
spared no expense or effort, even in death,
pouring out this steadfast love for you.

Grace and peace to you all,
